Trudy Ramsden worked in the Mobilising and Communication Centre (MACC) for 28 years. She was an outstanding control operator, dedicating her life to saving lives. She was commended by the Chief Fire Officer for her life saving fire survival guidance but that wasn't all...
Trudy was a character - she kept everybody entertained with her wild and wonderful life stories. She loved a party and the more Chrystal Champagne the better! She worked on all the watches over the years and gave input into almost every person's training, leaving a fond lasting impression.
When she became ill in November of 2006, Trudy took it in her stride, vowing to be back at work as soon as possible, true to character she kept everybody entertained doing impressions of Little Britain in her wheel chair.
However, she became very ill, very quickly, and on the 5th December she tragically died at the very young age of 46.
Trudy's watch was on duty that night- we were totally devastated, but we pulled together and carried on our roles in the control room just as she would have wanted.
Trudy left such a void; we quickly decided that we needed something to keep us going, Something to focus on. This is how we got to host THE WINTER SNOW BALL.
Alison and Lee Wainwright, myself and my husband Kevin, got together to plan the event and oversee the running of the Snowball. We were assisted by other members of MACC and of which a special thanks go to Julie Carter, Belinda & Tony Snelson, Richard Hall, Odsal Blue, Richard started off the Trudy Ramsden Memorial Fund when Odsal blue did the bike ride. The very talented Sarah Grieg, who helps with the design and printing of the stationary, Kelly Thornham who issued press releases and kept West Yorkshire FRS informed using Burning Issues, The list goes on...
We decided to hold the Winter Snow Ball's in Trudy's honour. We wanted a black tie event so we could don our ball gowns and bring out the Champagne. Trudy's chosen charities were The Fire Fighters Charity and a Cancer Charity (The Yorkshire Cancer Centre) so we planned our WINTER SNOW BALL raising funds for these two worthy charities.
I am very pleased (and proud) to say we have now planned our 4th ball and have raised over £35,000.00.
The next WINTER SNOW BALL takes place on 19th March 2011 at the brand new Leeds United Pavilion on Elland Road in Leeds. Again, we hope to have a fantastic night with entertainment and raise monies for the chosen charities.
We just hope to continue to raise funds for the Charities and highlight their causes. The Winter Snow balls has been a blessing for us and Trudy is still helping us now and is still very much alive in our memories.
